Living the Doll Life

Behind the doll face, lies a prisoner of her surroundings.

I remember being in my high school (senior) english class nearly 2 years ago, reading Henrik Ibsen's play, A Doll's House. Surprisingly enough, I actually enjoyed reading it because of the message that it portrayed. This play takes place in the late 1800's, somewhere in Europe. The reason I remeber this was because we were just discussing this in my history 102 class haha. In the play, the main character Nora is controlled by her husband, and he belittles her at times and tells her what she is allowed and not allowed to do, as if she was some child. Towards the end of the play, Nora realizes that all her life, she's been controlled; she lives her life as if she was a doll, and allowed people to take advantage of her. She ended up leaving her husband and kids to live her own life.

After discussing this in my senior class, I realized that I, myself have been living the life of a doll. I absoultely loved that metaphor because I can relate. I'm always living up to people's expectations, whether it comes from my family, school, society, etc. People always belittle me and take advantage. They claim that it is for my own good. But sometimes, I want to question that. Theres a difference between lookin out and just being controlling. My folks always tell me "Once youre done with college and you get a real job and you move out, you can do whatever you want." Typical asian parents. But, in my eyes, that's not always the case. I just want to do things out of free will. Why is it that important to do it later in life when I can do what I want to do now? On top of that, I feel the pressure from my own peers. I see them doing things that people of my age are doing, and in a way, I do feel jealous. At the same time, I feel like that I wouldnt know if I like to do those things or not becuase Ive never odne anything from experience to actually know myself. It sounds like I only want to do it because my peers are doing it, but let me just emphasize that that's not the case; I want to follow my heart and do what I please. Growing up, Ive always felt like I had to live up to people's expectations jsut to be accepted or to get rewarded. I think that's why I have a strong drive to be perfect in everything I do. All my life, Ive felt like a prisoner in my own house, waiting to be free. Sadly, I have to wait for another 2-4 years. Im starting to run out of patience.

Then, there are those situations where I feel that people are manipulating my mind to get what they want out of it. Those that truly know me know that I always want the best for people. I cant lie and be like most people and say, I'm grown up now. I know it myself that I still have growing up to do. And as of recently, Ive been noticing how naive Ive been for the majority portion of my life. I can get so easily manipulated only because "im too kind." Its so wrong for people to mess with your head for their own selfish reasons. Its better to be selfless than selfish. Some people just need to understand that. Once again, Im doing things to please others.

I do wish that most people can take me seiously. I'm 19 years old, not a little kid anymore. I want to please others, but I also want to please myself. As I said before, I want to follow my heart, and do whatever I want. Ive always been known as the "good girl," and theres absolutely nothing wrong with that; its just that I would like to have a little more freedom. But, until the time comes when Im finally set free out of this doll house I'm just living my life as a doll.

What Self-Esteem? [deep.]

"Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside? "
---Mulan, "Reflection"

Since Im not studying at all today when i planned on it [definitely cramming this weekend], I decided to write a profound blog entry that's been on my mind, self esteem...specifically mine. I have mentioned it in other previous entries, but it was never an in-depth discussion or anything based on specific personal experiences. I guess you can say that good self-esteem and I aren't exactly...uhh close? We've had a long history together, but not a great one. The thing is, I was born with a large mole on the bottom left of my chin. Of course, as a really young child (I would say around the age of 5 or 6), I noticed it, but wasn't really worried about it until i got a little bit older (around age 8 or 9). That's when my self-consciousness came up.

My first negative experience from it that I can remember was back in the summer when I was turning 9. I remember playing at Andrews Park in the Bronx with my little brother and cousin, and I was climbing up to go on the slides, this ugly mexican girl and her scrawny chinese friend had a water gun. They followed me around shooting water at me, and even followed me around when I was standing by my family. I looked at them and yelled "why are you shooting at me..can you stop?" The girl and the boy was like, "you have a dot on your face, and youre really ugly." If you thought that was bad, wait. She also had nerve to come up to me and say "i saw your mom and your grandma and whoever else and theyre really ugly jsut like you." I got really mad and ran to my mom, telling her what happen. She said dont worry about it and ignore her. So i ran to my grandmother, really upset. My grandmother isnt exactly fluent in English, but she gets by. SO she went up to the little girl who was still shooting water at me, and told her to stop. The girl jsut gave her an attitude, said whatever and left. My grandmother got angry, so she told me to go hit her. haha how ironic, but I was too scared to. This was probably the first experience that I can clearly remember the beginning of my low-self esteem...and at such a young age too...but kids can be cruel.

I'd say that my middle school years were the worst years of my life in dealing with this low-self esteem. We all go through that phase of wanting to fit in, dealing with fake friends, stupid drama, etc., during those years. Of course, I was never liked by any of the other kids (for the most part), and to make things even worse, I was just known as the ugly girl with the mole. Don't even ask em how many times I've ard kids go up to me and say "moley moley (like in Austin Powers)". I would pretend that things didn't get to me, but they really did, epsecially in 8th grade, that was my toughest year. A group of people (mostly girls) would harass/bully(or whatever you want to call it) me like every single day; it kind of made my 8th grade year depressing. I used to have sad thoughts on my mind, but I had no way to make things better. I even went to my guidance counselor, the principal, the vice-principal, the other counselor that dealt with druggy and suicidal kids, and none of these people helped. Ironically, after I graduated middle school and entered high school, there was a strict no bullying policy that was enforced. SMH. Ive complained to my parents every single day about it, and all they told me was to "jsut ignroe it." I couldnt "just ignore it." Kids at that age can be really mean. They could have at least went to the school and complained to them saying that their daughter was being harassed by a group of kids everyday at school and theyre not doing anything about it...ehh whatever my parents are Cambodian, they dont understand..well, to them nothing is bad compared what they went through, which is true...however, I cant help it but im not as strong haha. I couldnt even go on the bus to school anymore because it got that bad. I ended up having my mom driving me to school everyday.

Now, going thru all of that hell in midle school has made me really conscious about how i am in social situations. I became more shy and quiet than before. I knew deep down that I am a good person, it was just that I wished that others would respect mefor that than whatever I had on my face. After i graduated middle school, came the summer. That summer was full of changes. I got deep into my Cambodian culture + Buddhist religion, me caring MORE about my looks. I guess the reason for that was because I was invited to a cambodian sweet 16 as one of the maids, so I began to interact with more khmer kids, especially those around my age. It was pretty hard and awkward because I really hated the way I looked and was worried about what they thought about me. Well, the chick who had the sweet 16 + her family weren't exactly nice people. I eventually found out that they didnt want me there, and all that came out of their mouth was that i was "tall, ugly with that big mole on my chin." And once agian, the moley jokes came. Matter of fact, the moley jokes still came even in my freshman year in high school by a group of senior girls (i have no idea why they started hating on me, so it was mad weird). By the way, I no longer talk to that sweet 16 girl because her+ her family denied in my face that they didnt say that when they just got ratted out by the witnesses. I wasnt able to deal with the shit i dealt with in middle school and i felt completely betrayed when i had heard about the awful things these people said about me, so therefore, I just cut them out of my life.

I later found out by my dermatologist that I was able to have my mole removed, only to prevent the risk of developing skin cancer later on in life. The day I got it removed was life-changing. I felt like I was reborn. I promised myself that I would never make fun of or discriminate a person because of their physical appearance, epseically if it is of some type of deformity...its the personality that matters most. I been through all the dirty looks and the horrible things said to or about me, so I would know exactly how they would feel. After my surgery, I really thought that this low-self esteem would go away and for once, I could be normal again. However, that wasnt the case. I became more aware of my looks, having the need to look perfect all the time, espcially to make up for all the shit i went thru with my low self esteem. I still felt low about myself becuase I would always look around and see all these beautiful girls with nice figures and girls that looked like they could be import models, and whatever else, especially if they were asian haha. I just really had that desire to look perfect. But, the media is also to blame because all you see is hearing about how the most attractive girls have to look a certain way or wahtever ahah.

As of recently, I hear people call me pretty, and as nice as that sounds, for some reason I jsut cant believe them. I really think that I need to pay myself with more self-love, and really appreciate who I am. If others can why cant i? Improving my self-esteem has been such a long time goal, and its really difficult for me to resolve, especially for the things that went on in my past. I need to tell myself that I am a good person, maybe a pretty one too (haha) and that anybody that's going to hate me, obviously must be stupid. I dont know, but all I know is that I want to be happy and comfortable with who I am, and what I look like without feeling the pressure to look or be a certian way. I been through way too much in my past, that I cant take anymore negativity in myself. I hope to improve on this because this low self esteem is my worst enemy, and it needs to be gone.

edit real quick 10/30/09: I completely forgot to add this part to my blog: Looking back, I realized that to some extent, that mole I had gave me some inner strength. I was able to face people saying all these negtaive thigns to me, but morever at the fact that I was bale to focus mroe on my inner being rather than my exterior.

busy.busy.BUSY.

yes ive been busy busy busy. I blame damn anatomy and phsyiology2, but the good thing is that i recently discovered that I am able to apply for the nursing program right now. I hope that I get in, but this class is standing in the way. In lab today, we had to draw our blood with a needle, and umm...that took me a while but i finally got it haha. Life lately...hmmm..school, as you can tell Ive been overwhelmed...family, boyfriend, and friends...everything on my mind about that hasn't changed since my other blogs. And work...well..its been the same haha.

I just need to learn how to stop living in the past. I really do. Its a shame to see people once close to you change up, but if they change up on you, you should switch up on them too. Such foolishness is unnecessary. I like this quote ive heard in that MF Doom song i got up" ANd be too nice peopel mistake you for a dummy." Its true, that's somehting i need to fix. I hate it when people belittle me. If youre not that much older than me, don't talk to me like a little kid, and dont tell me what to do. I dont even know how to deal with stress anymore. Any suggestions? No, drinking shouldnt be one of them, that jsut makes it worse I heard haha...I dont have time to sit down and write poetry, or write in general, and usually when i do have ideas of poetry im either sleeping or busy and cant sit down and jot my thoughts. I still have this poetry project in mind that im goin to name "the journey to my sleep chronicles"[poetry and ideas that i get while im about to sleep] lol im so lame and cheesy but its been on my mind for a while. NO BITING!!! I guess thats it for now...im glad i got to recruit renee into this blogger site =]

sorry for this blog being choppy and random...if i ever have time i'll sit down and really go into details with things...peace and love ♥

Drama.Drama.and MORE DRAMA.

* Today is 9/11, a day to be remembered. God Bless all the loved ones of the victims of that day. Cant believe its been 8 years! I was in 6th grade when that happened and I can clearly remember EVERYTHING. I remember wearing a light blue shirt, purple sparkly jeans, and noticing how alot of kids were leaving school early, but didnt know why. I remeber some girl in my social studies class saying how the twin towers got bombed and our teacher just said "okay lets not talk about this!" then i rememebr my math teacher yelling at me for having too many folders. That week was a big mess. Its so unfortunate how something like that had to happen. I used to complain about why we had to commemorate this day like every year, even on random numbers that wasnt a 1 or 5, but now i see how big of an impact that day has on our country. Wow, I cant believe its really been that long.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The past 2-3 weeks have been absolutely nothing but DRAMA. My birthday was on the worst week too. My boyfriend's grandmother passed away two days before my birthday. I was so shocked to find out about that, and taht week I definitely was there for his family. WHats messed up is that the old folks had to spread really ugly gossip, saying that i made my bf throw me a party in his house, the site were his grandmother was being mourned. Ive never felt so upset about gossip before until this came along. It was so unfortunate about how his grandmother died and everything and people have the nerve to be direspectful and make things up at a time like that. Whats more messed up is that my grandma called up my mom before my birthdya to tell her all thsi and all my mom said was "ignore waht peopel are saying." My grandma got me mad the whole week. My birthday was probably the only day of that week that was good. I tried to be happy as much as possible because it was my speical day but also becuase my boyfriend threw me this party when i told him that he didnt have to because of what happened. I love him so much for that. I really appreciated it. Later that night, I developed a really big blsiter/sore on the side of my tongue. It was the most painful thing i can ever feel in my mouth besides the time I got all four of my wisdom teeth removed. I couldnt eat the thngs i wanted...espcially that bok la hong smhh!!! Then, the days go by, and Ive been having drama with friends and such. Some are resolved, others got worse. Others seem fake. I dont know anymore, Im willing to drop friendships like nothing if theyre being disrespectul and whatnot. I need to start sticking up for myself now. Peopel are still putitn my name in their mouth. Seriosuly, hop off the disco stick! I dont need fake friends. I dont like how people blame themselves being busy and "maturing" for not keepin in touch. A simple question like "how you been?" is considered staying in touch. Whatever, i feel like im a drama-magnet.

And as for school. Ugh. Im not looking forward to this semester. But on the brightside, my psychology professor prvides us notes online so we dont even need to show up to class. He seems like a good professor, unlike the one I had last semester. ANd, my statisitcs professor gives us open notebook/book quizzes every week and NO HOMEWORK. That definitely will giveme more time to focus on the othr 3 classes that i realyl need to care about, especially anatomy&physiolgy 2 >.< I need to bust my ass off for these classes. I better get back to work right now, and should be grateful that I dont need to work today so i can start my schoolwork. I jsut wish summer got extended becuase the last full week of summer taht I had was the worst way to end a summer. Summer '09, YOU SUCKED.
